Clinical Trial of Atrovent and Berodual in Patients with Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract
To examine the acute bronchodilator effect of combination of Ipratropium(Atrovent) and Fenoterol, the bronchodilating effect of Berodual in the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(n=30) and bronchial asthma(n=30) was compared with that of Fenoterol and Atrovent. Also the short-term side effects of each drug were observed. The following results were obtained.
1) In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the acute bronchodilator effects 60 minutes after drug inhalation were significantly different among drugs. Berodual had a greater bronchodilator effect than either drug alone, and bronchodilator effect of Atrovent was more pronounced than that of Fenoterol.
2) The acute bronchodilator effect of Berodual was found to be superior to either drug alone 60 minutes after drug inhalation in patients with bronchial asthma. Fenoterol showed greater effect than Atrovent.
3) Some patients complained of slight dry mouth, throat irritation, or nausea which were not so severe to discontinue drug inhalation.
We concluded that Berodual appeared to have a more potent and longer-lasting bronchodilator effect than either drug alone, and showed no serious acute side effects. Further study about the drug. tolerance and side effects with long term use would be needed.
